On 11 October, we had the joy of taking part in a moment that a family will remember forever. Our R44 helicopter, G-LYRA, took to the skies for a spectacular helicopter gender reveal flight over a gathering near the dramatic Beachy Head Cliffs.
On board were Captain Ken Faria and our weekend Operations Manager, Geoff, who oversaw the onboard smoke system and ensured the reveal unfolded exactly as planned. As G-LYRA made its way toward Friston, the excited crowd waited below, eager for the airborne announcement.
Planning an Unforgettable Aerial Reveal
All helicopter gender reveal flights begin with careful preparation, and this one was no exception. We submitted our application and detailed risk assessment to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on 25 September and received approval on 30 September.
Geoff carried the coloured smoke system along with a backup unit, ensuring we were ready for all contingencies, though the primary system performed perfectly.
Two Passes, One Big Moment
To heighten the excitement, we planned two passes over the gathering area, all conducted strictly within standard operational rules.
The Tease: The first pass served to capture everyone’s attention and let guests know something special was about to happen.
The Reveal: On the second pass, the coloured smoke system was deployed, painting the sky with the baby’s gender and creating a stunning moment shared by everyone watching.
It was a beautiful celebration from the air and from the ground.
