Le Touquet – 31st August 2018

A compilation of video and images of the trip to Le Touquet 2018. (Credit:  Ken Faria)

Early on Friday 31st August the sun was out, the clouds were few and the trip to Le Touquet from Redhill was going ahead.

Out on the pads were 2 x G2’s, 1 x R22 and 1 x R44.  Once these aircraft depart with their pilots and passengers another 3 x R44’s would be wheeled out onto the pads ready to lift and the journey to France.

Planning and preparation!

Planning is key to most activities and nevermore so than coordinating a large number of pilots with a large number of aircraft.

Below is a time-lapse video of the activity on the morning to get the aircraft out onto the pads and away.

Valentines Flights

Our most popular tour is our most romantic tour. Arrive at Redhill Aerodrome in the heart of the Surrey countryside just 10 minutes from gatwick Airport where our friendly team will meet you. Your flight begins over lush green fields before we head north towards Central London. Flying past Epsom Race Course and in to the London Heathrow Control Zone. From Banstead and Nonsuch Park we track the A3 past Wimbledon and Richmond Park heading towards the arch of Wembley Stadium. We join the River Thames and follow this as we gently glide through the heart of England, London.

Along the route you’ll pass Chelsea Football Club, Battersea Power Station, Hyde Park, The Royal Albert Hall and the private gardens at the rear of Buckingham Palace.  We follow the River Thames all the way through the city over Vauxhall Bridge and past the Houses of Parliament, the Millennium Eye, Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s Cathedral and The Globe Theatre. On the way out of the City we pass the Financial district ‘The City’, The Tower of London, HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge.

As we turn south at the Isle of Dogs you will have a fantastic view of the whole of London. We cruise over Greenwich Park, The Royal Naval College and The Royal Observatory, nip over Croydon City Centre and back into the Surrey countryside returns and you are nearly home after one of the best experiences of your life.

If you choose to add the Olympic Extension to your Tour you’ll marvel at the massive scale of the Olympic village and take in the surrounding scenery from the air. The village encompasses a world-class Aquatics Centre and the new Stratford international station in East London. Including this in your London tour adds an extra 10 minutes to the sightseeing flight and will make it a day to remember.

Vive La France

Vive la Poésie  – by Anne Marie G

My first time to Le Touquet with this motley crew
Hitched a ride out to France, cos I am new
Started off with a briefing from Captain Joe
He told us all we needed to know.

We checked all our rides were ready to fly
And six helicopters took to the sky
Left Redhill in sunshine, that was some luck,
‘Cos the rest of the week it rained like **ck.

We flew out of Surrey and aimed for the coast
I was in PGGY, she’s faster than most
Even when flown by Captain Nic
He’s not that fast but his flying’s quite slick.

We took in the views on every side
Cameras out, enjoying the ride
Not much else to do when you’re in the back,
But heckle and make the odd wisecrack.

We got to the Channel and over to France
Cruising high in the air as we crossed La Manche
After not very long we made it to land
Turned south and cruised down over the sand

Heard traffic control and a German plane
Failing with English again and again
He finally landed and got to the gate
I’m guessing they must’ve used Google translate.

We set down in France and pedalled to lunch
Ken trying to control the unruly bunch
Arrived in one piece and sat down to dine
A portion of fish, a bottle of wine.
(Actually, no wine, we’re pilots!)

Onwards to ice cream down by the sea
can’t believe nobody bought one for me!
A walk back through town, it’s a lovely place
A slow pedal back, it wasn’t a race.

Then the return leg and my turn in charge
To take to the skies high above La Plage
I checked little NDIA, she was all right
Whistled for Tim and then we took flight.

We flew up the coast and turned left for Kent
Remembered to ditch the bad French accent
Cruised over the sea at 3,000ft
It’s an awesome view from the pilot’s seat.

We waved to LYZA as we flew on back
She’s easy to spot, she’s a Union Jack
I don’t think she saw us, she was going so fast
No way she was getting home last.

We all got home safely, sometime around four,
from a trip that left us all wanting some more
Good times and good friends on a flying sortie
Well, they do say that life begins at forty!

2017 Season at an end…

As another season comes to an end we must welcome all our new students who have taken up flying and increased our Instructors log book entries. As the days are drawing shorter and getting colder remember we are still open for business, as our Brucie would have said “Keep Flying”.

G-ETWO will be returning to the Cotswolds at the end of September but we still have plenty to offer on the training front: G-LYZA, G-ERRY, G-NDIA, G-PAMY,G-PGGY and G-SWNS are all awaiting your attendance!

On the Charter front, amongst the celebrities this summer we transferred Lewis Hamilton to Silverstone for the Grand Prix –he won –could it be the smooth flight from our pilot helped the smooth drive to victory? Unfortunately our wonderful EC130 G-WCKD has now moved on and is taking up residence in Switzerland. If anyone knows of another EC130 please let Ken know!!

Both our EC120s G-DLUX and G-OTFL are still working hard as some of the few single engine helicopters still able to land at London Battersea  Heliport commercially.
The summer ended with a deflated drizzle and the planned barbeque for the 1st of October to end things with a bang was cancelled (rain, rain and more rain!). Having survived Hurricane Ophelia and Storm Brian our next social event is the Firework display! – 11/11/2017 at 18:00.

The EC120 Type Rating

Congratulations to Tim Piper for completing his Eurocopter EC120 type rating! He will now be flying our EC120 helicopters for our commercial charters as well as instructing on the Robinson R22, R44 and Cabri G2!

Once you’ve completed your ppl(h) or cpl(h) you too may consider getting a type rating on a larger helicopter…

EC120 Type Rating By Cap’n Tim Piper

The Eurocopter EC120 is a great pilot’s machine, as long as the checklist is followed the start can be very uneventful although exciting as you hear the Arrius 2F turbine engine start to come to life. Under instruction of Ken I lifted it into the hover using a lot of right pedal due to the fenestron tail rotor being less efficient than a conventional tail rotor system in the hover, this could take a little bit of getting used to unless you have previous experience with the Cabri G2 helicopter. Transitioning into forward flight I started to relax into the aircraft and was feeling at home. Climbs, descents, and turns are all relatively simple compared to the smaller piston aircrafts even the autorotation’s are no way near as fraught with the dangers of over speeding the rotor system or running out of inertia when you have finished the flare. The whole experience was very enjoyable even the test at the end.

Airfield detail was the most enjoyable part with some real challenges, Tail rotor failure, hydraulic failure, engine failure in the hover and from circuit height, you would have thought we were having a bad day but as they were all simulated it was all ok. Overall the aircraft has a very unrushed feel to it allowing the pilot to fly the aircraft even if an emergency has occurred. Best part, it’s a great big toy with a jet engine in it, every man’s inner child’s dream!

During the Type Rating course along with lots of flying (minimum flight time is 3 hours + test) I had ground school with my instructor Ken and completed self-study of the flight manual and emergency procedures in depth.

If you have a chance to have a go in one I would grab it by with both hands!
